Beat the Heat- Summer Vacation Cycling Hacks

Beat the Heat- Summer Vacation Cycling Hacks

Did you know that in the past 10 years, India’s urban areas have experienced an alarming temperature increase of 12°C? Temperatures have risen and have created heatwaves more intense than the past few years. Urban heat prone zones are warming faster, with rising nighttime temperatures and record-breaking heatwaves.

With 2024 being the hottest recorded year for India, the risks of extreme heat are growing. However, outdoor play remains essential for children's health and well-being. So, how do we balance the need for outdoor activity while protecting them from excessive heat?

We’ve compiled a few practical tips your kids can enjoy the summer outside yet still remain happy and hydrated:

1. Time It Right

Avoid going out during peak heat hours (10 AM – 4 PM). Instead, encourage early morning or late evening activities when temperatures are lower, and the sun’s rays are less intense. This keeps them less likely to develop dehydration or sun stroke even in their more active hours

2. Stay Hydrated

Make sure children drink plenty of water before, during, and after outdoor play. Electrolyte-rich drinks can also help replace lost minerals due to sweating. Provide them with a reusable water bottle to carry while cycling or playing. An attached Water Bottle (link to Gro Club water bottle holder) is a perfect solution to ensure they aren’t dehydrated but happy.

3. Dress Smart

Light-colored, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing can help reflect heat and keep kids cool. Preferably t-shirts and loose fitting pants as they are clothes that are easily washable and help kids feel lighter.

4. Choose Shaded Areas

Encourage outdoor play in parks with ample tree cover or shaded cycling tracks. Go to your local park and enjoy the fresh outdoors, local apartment spaces are great shaded areas too! If available, splash parks or water play areas can offer a fun way to cool off while staying active.

5. Sun Protection is a Must

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50 or higher) at least 20 minutes before heading out. Another option would be to ensure they wear caps throughout, so that they do not get badly sunburnt.

6. Adjust the their Playing Routine

If activities like cycling are regular, opt for early morning or evening outings when temperatures are more bearable. Let them enjoy themselves at home till then and engage them in various activities. This lets their minds set a mental timetable of when to expect play time and to anticipate for the day.

7. Be Aware of Heat-Related Symptoms

Teach children and fellow parents to recognize signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, and excessive sweating. If symptoms occur, move to a cool place, provide water, and seek medical attention if necessary.

Parents and caregivers can make small but meaningful adjustments to their routines to ensure that kids remain active and engaged. Providing access to cooling options, such as water play or misting fans, and creating a flexible schedule for outdoor play can make a significant difference.

It’s also important to teach children the importance of self-care in the heat, helping them develop habits that will serve them well as temperatures continue to rise. By staying informed, prepared, and adaptable, families can still make the most of summer while prioritizing safety and well-being.
